Bring Wildlife Into Your Garden

These days, we’re more conscious than ever about the planet and the health of the natural environment around us. Here at Village Products, we’ve seen that more and more people are taking steps to reduce their carbon footprint and embrace sustainable living. With climate change and habitat erosion, a lot of natural wildlife is under pressure. However, you can take a few small steps and create a garden ecosystem that encourages birds, bugs, and bees to visit and live in your back garden!

Boxes For The Birds

Bird boxes are fantastic for attracting a wide range of birds into your garden. Put up a nesting box or a feeding box and before long you’ll begin to see birds you’ve never seen in your garden before. Garden birds are a wonderful addition to your garden thanks to the beautiful relaxing birdsong and gorgeous colours they bring with them.

Make sure that any nesting boxes you put up are in a sheltered spot and away from any potential predators – especially out of reach of domestic cats! Try to offer a mix of different foods such as seeds and nuts, and scatter wildflower seeds across your lawn to attract birds very quickly.

Creating ideal nesting habitats for local wildlife is a fantastic way of encouraging garden bird populations to soar!

Start A Compost Heap

Compost is excellent for your garden, that’s true. What it’s also great for is attracting plenty of worms and insects which, in turn, attract birds, hedgehogs, and other local wildlife into your garden. Compost makes your soil healthy, which is good for absolutely everything living in your garden. Not only is it an excellent mulch, but it’s completely free and easy to make.

You can compost your garden waste to help the plants and wildlife, providing an extension of their natural habitats. Also, unlike other organic matter you might purchase or import, homemade compost is completely green, coming without any packaging or fuel miles to provide shelter for small garden plants and animals year-round.

Grow Some Wildflowers

Want to make your garden even more beautiful and colourful, all while encouraging more local wildlife into your garden ecosystem? Consider growing and cultivating colourful wildflowers to make your garden even more appealing for bees and butterflies. Some of the best wildlife-attracting plants include buddleias (a particular favourite of butterflies), rosemary, lavender, lamiums, honeysuckles, geraniums, foxgloves, and many more.

Wildflowers are beautiful and natural way of encouraging pollination and inviting more bees and butterflies into your garden. Native species with open structured flowers are great for bees – not only do the colours look fantastic, but the insects and wildlife love them too.

Make A Water Feature Or Pond

If you want to bring in some entirely new and unique garden plants and garden animals into your life, then adding water might be the perfect solution! Ideally, digging a pond is the best way to introduce a vast range of new wildlife to your garden, but the truth is that even an upturned container of water will do the trick. You may attract frogs as well as insects such as dragonflies. Birds and other mammals will use the water to drink from, and you can allow water lilies, pondweed and broadleaf to further develop your unique underwater environment.

Allow your plant life to grow and colonise naturally for the best results, and consider adding fish but remember that they will feed on the plants and insects around the water in your garden.

How To Protect Your Wooden Gates From The Winter Weather

The harsh weather of winter is known to cause all kinds of damage to external surfaces and materials here in the UK. One of the most serious impacts it can have is on your wooden gates. If you’re here, then that means that you know that the integrity and appearance of your gate are at risk with winter approaching – with a combination of cold, rain, snow and hail, your wooden gate can easily become damaged, stained or marked.

Your wooden gate is an entryway into your home – whether installed as a driveway gate, side gate or garden gate. It invites guests into your home and is a point of pride for homeowners. If you’ve invested in a beautifully made, completely bespoke new wooden gate from Village Products, then the last thing you want is to worry about the winter weather causing expensive damage. With that in mind, here’s our guide to protecting your wooden gates from the winter weather.

What Kind Of Damage Does Winter Weather Cause To Your Wooden Gates?

First of all, it’s important to understand the kind of damage that can be caused during winter. It’s important to be prepared and understand exactly what it is that you’re protecting your gates from. Sometimes, the damage is just cosmetic. However, the weather can sometimes damage the structure of your wooden gate, affecting its longevity and therefore its lifetime value.

  • Discolouration – Because of the barrage of rain and other bad weather, it’s very easy for your wooden gates to become discoloured during the winter months.
  • Cracked wood – When wood becomes extremely damp and then dries, the surface often becomes cracked and worn, hurting your gate’s appearance.
  • Fungus – One of the biggest threats to a timber gate in winter is the risk of fungal growth. If your domestic wooden gates are left untreated, then you might experience fungal and other growths which can harm your wood’s integrity.
  • Spongy wood – Not only can your gate become cracked and discoloured under winter conditions, but it can also become soft or spongy. This makes it much easier for the gate to become damaged and suffer from the wear and tear of general use.

Winter weather can have a big impact on your wooden gates. It can damage both the appearance and strength of the timber, which is why it’s important to protect against this. But how do you do that?

How Can I Protect My Wooden Gate From Winter Weather?

Thankfully, there are a few things you can do to help protect your timber gate during the winter season, including:

  • Check your gate’s condition and fix any existing damage – Make sure that you thoroughly check the state of your gate before the winter weather hits. Make sure that your gate posts are fully secured, replacing them if need be. Check for softwood, rot and insect damage to make sure that your gate’s integrity hasn’t already been damaged – these kinds of issues can only magnify the damage that winter conditions may cause.
  • Keep your gate clean of ice and snow buildup – If ice or snow are allowed to rest on the surface of your gate, you can easily find yourself ending up with spongy, discoloured and cracked timber gates. During winter, it’s a great idea to maintain your gate by clearing off any ice or snow and repeating this exercise – in particular after a storm or snowfall.
  • Protect the wood – The best way to give your gate an extra layer of protection is exactly that – to give it an extra layer of protection. Using a decent preservative will help defend your wooden gate from decay, mould and fungi during winter. Knowing which treatment is right is entirely dependent on what kind of gate you have and what timber is used. Here at Village Products, we love the Teknos range of wood treatments for different kinds of gates.

How To Look After Your Wood

When you choose to have a quality wooden gate installed on your property, you’re making an investment that you hope will last for years to come. Here at Village Products, our wooden gates serve a number of benefits, including looking great, protecting your home and increasing your privacy. When it comes to garden gates, driveway gates and side gates, the chances are that they are publicly visible, and you’re going to want to keep them looking great for as long as possible.

Fortunately, with a bit of love, care and maintenance, our gates will look fantastic for years. It doesn’t take a lot of treatment, but it’s worth keeping on top of things to ensure that your gates stay in top condition. With a bit of treatment, you’ll help your gates to survive the change in seasons and prevent deterioration. With that in mind, here are some tips on how to look after your wood:

SoftwoodSoftwood side gate back

It’s very important to treat your softwood gates with water repellent and breathable wood preservatives. Then, hang them for a while to prevent moisture ingress. This helps to avoid any swelling or warping. We always recommend customers to use a spirit based oil or stain on their softwood gates – this is because this is more easily absorbed into the wood, helping to repel water and prevent rot.

Different treatments will come with different guidelines as to how often you should re-treat your wood. Generally speaking, we suggest giving your softwood gate a fresh coat of treatment every six months. Preferably, treat your wood during the changing seasons – before summer and winter. This allows you to benefit from fresh protection during the extreme temperature differences.

Hardwood Gates

Iroko Hardwood Side GateOne of the benefits of having your own hardwood gate designed, supplied and installed here at Village Products, is that our hardwood timbers are particularly durable and resilient. This means that there’s not as much work involved in preserving your hardwood timber. Hardwoods are much better at looking after themselves.

It’s worth bearing in mind, however, that hardwoods do lose their colour over time. This means that they benefit from a different kind of treatment. Hardwoods will often turn silver grey over time, so to prevent this and keep their warmer and more natural wooden colour, you should stain and oil the gate relatively often.

Here at Village Products, we stock Teknos – a wood treatment option that use and love ourselves. Teknos is a trusted partner of ours, and its available in both top and base coats. It also comes in a wide range of different wood colours and shades, so you’re sure to find something suitable for your wooden gate.
